The City of Atlanta Mourns the First Black Female Mega Pastor Apostle Collette Lewis Gunby

By Dr. Renee Sunshine Lewis

In 1986, when being a female Pastor was not popular, Apostle Collette Lewis Gunby, along with her late husband Pastor Ronald E. Gunby founded the Green Pastures Christian Ministries. Under their great leadership, Green Pastures Daycare (for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years old), Elementary School and High School were opened.

Soon afterwards, Pastor Ron passed, leaving Apostle Collette a widow at the age of 32 with two children, Kelley and Douglas. She stepped out to preach the Gospel alone and never looked back. Thousands joined under this great Ministry. It is noted in the Gospel Arena that Apostle Collette is the first woman to pastor a mega church. Pastor Creflo Dollar and the late Bishop Eddie Long sat under her teachings. Pastor Creflo Dollar did a beautiful tribute to her in his sermon last week online, and he was brought to tears.

In the early 1990s, Apostle Collette took a leap of faith and her church purchased several real estate properties which included the CVS and Student Housing Apartments located in the Historic West End area, Green Pastures Commons, an affordable Housing Community for Seniors. Green Pastures is the original host of the outstanding King of Glory Productions that was held at the Atlanta Civic Center for almost 40 years. Over 25,000 guests attended over the course of the weekend and lives were saved and changed forever.

On May 6, 2023, several hundreds to well over a thousand will gather to show their love and respect to this phenomenal woman of God.

Apostle Collette happens to be sister of Dr. Renee Sunshine Lewis. Her siblings include Atlanta’s Oldest Archbishop John H. Lewis III, Reverend Nawanna Lewis Miller, Veronica Lewis Long, Aretha Rosser and Lifetime Victim Advocate and Crisis Intervention Specialist Dr. Renee Sunshine Lewis.

A Celebration of Life will be held this morning, May 6, 2023 at 10 am at the Green Pastures Ministries located at 5455 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur, Georgia.
