Street Charity is an organization that was created by John and Antuanette Patton with the idea of feeding the homeless who are on the street. They wanted to bring back some independence to individuals, away from the limitations of the soup kitchen. They wanted to provide, to the homeless, a broader range of options in the food choices that are available to them. With that in mind, they came up with a unique way of resourcing food that allowed the homeless consumer to eat with dignity. Their organization created a $5 Street Charity Discovery Prepaid Card, which can be handed to individuals who can use it at national fast food and quick-service restaurants.
John Patton reminded us about the current state of the country. He stated that there are currently 47 million Americans who go hungry every day. Food insecurity, as defined by the USDA, is an indictment of the richest country in the world. There are numerous organizations in Atlanta who have signed up to be partners to be able to distribute the cards to the needy.
Robb Pitts, Chairman, Fulton County Board of Commissioners, stated, “There are people who are homeless, down on their luck, and looking for a job. This facility will help these people, and I want to be thankful to these guys for bringing forward this wonderful option, and we’re delighted to have you here in Fulton County.”
Council member Michael Julien Bond, from the City of Atlanta, expressed his gratitude for such a wonderful idea. He explained, “Our divergent center is just one of the ways that we can serve this program. This program will enable the targeting of the people who need it most. This is a way that anybody can ensure that people get the help that they need.” Council member Bond then expressed his appreciation for the restaurants and food services that have partnered in this venture. When you’ve lost everything: your self-esteem, your home, your job – things will look different. This program will help to lift you back up. He said that this is great work, and the city of Atlanta would like to work more with the organizer of the program. Everyone needs to pass their street charity cards on to the needy.
Stephanie Fischer, president of the GA restaurant association, congratulated John and Antuanette on creating a wonderful approach to helping the homeless. She said, our commitment to supporting this charity is to give people back their dignity and let them join us at the table.
Julia Bryant Kuykendall, executive director of Feeding Georgia, explained that one in seven Georgians are adversely affected by food insecurity and poverty. That includes children, seniors, and everyday people who are just finding it difficult to survive. She acknowledged that the face of hunger looks different in every community. So, it makes it difficult to predict what hunger looks like when folks are trying to put food on the table or struggling to determine where the next meal is coming from. Our pledge today is to support this charity and for all of us to end hunger in the community and in the process, giving people back their dignity and let them join us at the table.
