The Nature Gurlz group formed out of need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Counteracting people’s anxiety and feelings of hopelessness, approximately 35, 40 or more women join one another and walk for health and fellowship, safely distanced, at the Cascade Nature Preserve off of Southwest Atlanta’s historic Cascade Road. At times, they also walk Atlanta’s newly developed BeltLine paths. The ladies, aged 60 to 80+, have all been strong fixtures in Atlanta’s business skyline, affiliated with many companies and associations in Atlanta. As the group gathers early on mornings, it enables friends to interact and socialize as well as exercise.

On October 14, 2020, the group gathered for a brief moment before heading out for early voting at different parts of the metro area of Atlanta. Many went to the State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta and say that they were there for about ten minutes voting… a very short wait. Others voted at the City of South Fulton Southwest Arts Center on New Hope Road where there was a short and pleasant wait.

Many in the group are proud leaders and activists of the Atlanta community. They have adopted the “When We All Vote” mission that was co-chaired by former First Lady Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monae, Chris Paul, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in 2018.

When We All Vote is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that is on a mission to increase participation in every election and close the race and age voting gap by changing the culture around voting, harnessing grassroots energy, and through strategic partnerships to reach every American.

Atlanta community organizers and business leaders Lisa Baker and Cecilia Houston-Torrence say that The Nature Gurlz helps to raise awareness about elections, get voters engaged and shares resources and knowledge to vote. “Make a Plan, and Go Vote.”
