National Action Network (NAN) Addresses the Killing of Jordan Neely at the NAN House of Justice

Will Call for Investigation into Two Other Passengers Involved, Question Police Response Immediately After Horrific Killing

New York, NY (Friday, May 5, 2023)The National Action Network (NAN) will address the chokehold killing of Jordan Neely during tomorrow’s Saturday Action Rally at the House of Justice in Harlem. NAN will call for the Manhattan District Attorney to explore charges against the two other individuals seen on horrific cellphone video restraining Neely while a 24-year-old passenger wrapped his arms around the homeless man’s neck. They will also question why police at the local precinct allowed the passenger who restrained Neely to walk free without any charges.

The killing of Neely, a homeless man who often performed on subways as Michael Jackson, has set off a wave of backlash throughout the City. Neely was reportedly having a mental health episode when he walked onto an F train. Moments later, the passenger is seen walking behind Neely and putting him into a chokehold. Neely, 30, later died at the hospital.

This horrific event echoes two past incidents that Reverend Al Sharpton fought against: the 1984 incident in which would-be vigilant Bernhard Goetz shot four Black men he accused of trying to rob him and the 2014 police killing of Eric Garner, who died after a cop put him into a chokehold. Earlier this week, Reverend Sharpton condemned the killing and vowed to fight any attempts at vigilantism – noting it has never been acceptable. NAN has also offered to help pay for Neely to have a dignified funeral.
