Herbert Lee Linsey, Sr.
March 11, 1931 – November 29, 2022
Herbert Lee Linsey, Sr. was the 8th child born to Samuel L. Linsey and L.E. Fonney Linsey in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia in 1949 and went on to graduate from Morris Brown College in 1953 majoring in music and was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Vander Cook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. He was a music teacher and director of music at E.L. Conley Elementary, Continental Conley Elementary, L.O. Kimberley Elementary, Central High School and many more schools in the City of Atlanta. He received numerous honors, awards and acknowledgements for his selfless contribution to music in the Atlanta Public School System.
Linsey was also known for working tirelessly for The Atlanta Inquirer Newspaper in the circulation and deliveries department in its early stages. For several years, he was the Circulation Manager for The Inquirer, overseeing many of the “newspaper boys” and deliveries and routing of the newspaper. Although he was not working in that capacity, he continued to be part of The Inquirer family. He not only worked with The Inquirer, but was a longtime friend of many of the founders and early employees of the newspaper, including John B. Smith, Sr. and Jesse Hill, Jr.
Linsey was a member of Warren Methodist Church for several years and also attended Iconium Baptist Church where his brother Reverend Alfonso Linsey was pastor. During the last three years of his life, he attended Chapel Hill Church Atlanta with his son, Herbert, Jr., and grandchildren. He enjoyed deep sea fishing with his friends, bowling where he received many trophies, playing cards and he loved to cook and he was absolutely great at it.
Linsey, Sr. married Hortense Linsey (deceased) they were married for 56 years. He is survived by their only son, Minister Herbert Linsey, Jr. and five grandchildren, Joshua; wife Kimberley, Daniel wife Kori, Caleb, Isaiah; wife Tramacia, Faith, granddaughter and seven great-grandchildren; Mckenzie, Cavin, Gia, Alex, Anthony, Aria, Energy, and one brother, Wallace V. Linsey Sr. (90 years old), wife Jean Linsey; sisters-in-law, Jean, Velma, Juanita (95 years old), Edith and Mae Linsey. He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister, Lizzie Mae, Samuel L. Jr., Wenislow, Lewis Sr., Reverend Malvin Alfonso Sr., Bishop Nathaniel Linsey and Maxie Linsey, and host of nephews, nieces and their children, as well as a multitude of cousins.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 8th at 1:00 pm at Chapel Hill Church Atlanta, located at 4330 Washington Road in East Point, Georgia 30344. Viewing for the public will be on Wednesday, December 7th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Murray Brothers Funeral Home at 1199 Utoy Springs Road SW in Atlanta, Georgia 30331.
