LABOR DAY EVENT: Communications Workers of America and Microsoft to Help Atlanta Residents ‘Get Connected’ to No-Cost Internet Service at Labor Day Festival

On Labor Day, September 5, volunteers from the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union and Microsoft will be hosting a “Get Connected” event at the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council’s annual Labor Day festival.

The groups are coordinating with non-profit EveryoneOn and the Atlanta Housing Authority to pre-qualify residents for the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program. Internet Service Providers that offer no-cost high speed broadband plans to Affordable Connectivity Program enrollees will be available on site to sign residents up for service. (View the flier distributed to Atlanta Housing Authority residents here.)

The event will include a community BBQ, free school supplies, live music, and activities for children. The partnership between CWA and Microsoft to enroll residents in the Affordable Connectivity Program builds on a groundbreaking labor neutrality agreement, announced in June, which includes a commitment to collaborate on technology adoption and skill building programs.

The FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program is a benefit program geared towards helping households afford broadband. The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.
