Atlanta Music Legend Celebrates 88th Birthday with Book Release

While life in the AU Center appeared to be business as usual, on October 12, 2023, something special happened across the street from Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University. At the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center, located at 807 Student Movement Boulevard, a crowd gathered to join in an occasion for an Atlanta music icon.

Dr. James H. Patterson, professor at Clark Atlanta and Director of the Clark Atlanta University Jazz Orchestra, celebrated with friends and family the release of his first book. Not only was the date special because of his book release, but Patterson also celebrated his 88th birthday on the same day.

Dr. Sharon A. Willis, editor of Dr. Patterson’s book, was on hand to introduce this well-known musician to an eager crowd. She also led a question-and-answer period where audience members were allowed to ask Patterson questions about his life as a musician, his childhood, and his relationship with Clark Atlanta University and the Atlanta University Center.

The title of Patterson’s book is “My Memoir” and is somewhat of a chronological history of his life and experiences, from beginning to present.

There was also a reception held for Patterson where they sang “Happy Birthday” to him. There was plenty of food and birthday cake to help with the celebration.
