Atlanta, GA – July 17, 2025 – The Positive Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing youth violence through performing and visual arts, is proud to announce its selection to perform at the prestigious Atlanta Black Theatre Festival for the first time. The organization’s Playahz InSpirational Theatre Arts Company will present a stage reading of Willie Alston’s thought-provoking and controversial play, “Breathe”.
The Positive Project utilizes the power of theatre and visual arts as a deterrent against gangs, drugs, and youth crime. By providing a creative outlet and fostering a sense of community, the organization empowers young people to make positive choices and build brighter futures. “We believe that art can be a powerful tool for social change,” says Willie Alston, Executive Artistic Director at The Positive Project. “Our goal is to provide young people with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed, while also addressing the root causes of violence in our communities.”
About the Play
“Breathe”, written by Willie Alston, is a gripping drama that explores a fictional account of an old recluse who just happens to live in an upstairs loft across the street where George Floyd was murdered. The play is known for its raw honesty and unflinching portrayal of police brutality as many characters infringe upon his solitude and “Grandpa Richards” portrayed by Willie Alston, tries unsuccessfully to keep them out. While controversial, the play offers a powerful message of hope and redemption.
The stage reading of “Breathe” will be performed on Friday, August 29th at 11:45AM at the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival, held at Hilton Atlanta Airport Hotel, 1031 Virginia Ave. Hapeville, Georgia 30354, (404) 767-9000.
