HBCU-Atlanta University (AU) Center Football, Morehouse Breaks Losing Skid with Upset Victory over Rival Tuskegee

Winless Morehouse took the world of college football and set it on its ear on Saturday, October 9, 2021 by surprising longtime rival Tuskegee University with a 31-15 victory.

Before a crowd of 6,798, the Maroon Tigers pulled off the win over their Alabama rivals for the first time since 2011 when they beat the opposing elevens 17-14. This was also the first time this 85-year-old mixing which began in 1936 as the Columbus (GA) Classic (then part of that city’s annual state was played in a new venue Birmingham, Alabama at the steel-town’s historic Legion Field. This was also only the third time Morehouse had won the rivalry in the last 13 years under head coach Richard Freeman.

The win was also crucial. It handed Morehouse a long-sought conference victory while dropping “Skegee” to 2-5 overall. Both schools are now 1-1 in conference (SIAC) play.

Morehouse now readies for their homecoming showdown against Fort Valley State University on October 16 as the Marooners return to their familiar turf of BT Harvey Stadium. The two schools first began playing in 1974 with the Wildcats winning 41-25. In 46 years, Fort Valley leads the series 34-12. Under current head coach Richard Freeman, FVSU leads the 13-game set 9-4 since 2007.
