The Loch Lomond Community Association along with other SW Atlanta communities have invited the Georgia Department of Transportation to present their information regarding the new I-20/I-285 Interchange for SW Atlanta, a massive project.

The organizations are trying to reach as many people as possible to inform them of this event which will affect them. The meeting date is March 14, 2023, at 4001 Danforth Road SW, in Atlanta, Georgia 30331-7205, from 2 pm -5 pm.

I-285 / I-20 West Interchange
A Major Mobility Project — P.I. Number: 0013918

The I-285 / I-20 West Interchange project proposes improvements to the I-285/I-20 West Interchange and the addition of lanes along I-20 in Fulton, Cobb, and Douglas counties.

Improvements include:

  • Removal of left-hand ramp entrance and exits, improvements to horizontal and vertical alignments, and construction of two-lane ramps within the interchange
  • Construction of a westbound collector-distributor (CD) system, or connecting lanes, from the I-285/I-20 West Interchange to Fulton Industrial Boulevard
  • Construction of additional lanes along I-20 eastbound from Factory Shoals Road east to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive and along I-285 from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive north to Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway to accommodate interchange improvements
  • Modification or replacement of bridges within the interchange and along I-20 and I-285

5 Things You Need to Know

  1. Project will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance operations and safety.
  2. The new ramps proposed and improvements to existing ramps will improve design speeds.
  3. Environmental studies have been prepared that assess noise impacts and mitigation, and potential effects on historic and community resources.
  4. Project helps decrease motorist travel times.
  5. One of the large-scale Major Mobility Investment Program projects to improve transportation in Georgia’s metro areas.

What’s the Project Status?

  • Georgia DOT will host a Public Hearing Open House (PHOH) and open comment period in December 2022.
  • The project team will respond to all comments and questions submitted in Q1 2023. Project will continue to advance and a Developer is expected to be awarded in 2024. The schedule is subject to change.
