Metropolitan Atlanta Community Band (MACB) Performs and Celebrates 25 Years

Founded in October 1996, the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Band (MACB), a Southwest Atlanta-based concert band, gives free performances and raises money for scholarships.

Dr. Alfred D. Wyatt, Sr., retired music teacher and band director of the Atlanta Public Schools, is the founding director and former CEO of the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Band (MACB). The current CEO of MACB is Diane Hawkins-Cox. Curtis Byrdsong is principal associate director; Vanable H. Moody, Sr. and Allen Ward, Jr. are associate directors.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, after a nearly three-year pandemic hiatus in performing, MACB is giving its annual Christmas concert at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, December 10, at 2 pm, on the stage outside of the former Macy’s entrance inside of the mall.

MACB will have other concerts this season as well, culminating in a 25th Anniversary Spring Concert at Southwest Atlanta Arts Center in May 2023. Several prominent Atlantans have been members over the years, and while it performs mainly in Southwest Atlanta and South Fulton, the band has traveled as far away as Washington, DC, performing at the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. MACB also provides Black History Month concerts every February.

MACB has a vision of advancement of the community. Its goals to seek this advancement are driven by:

• Advocating for music education in schools since studies show students who learn music perform better in other subjects;
• Giving college scholarships;
• Providing a performance outlet for community members who play concert band instruments; and
• Serving as a positive image of African-Americans when so many negative images of our race pervade mainstream and social media.
